These shows create suspense by revealing secrets from previous generations, making the central mysteries feel deeply personal and emotionally impactful.

Both Locke & Key and Stranger Things have a lot in common. A major part of each show focuses on dangers coming from another dimension – in Locke & Key, these threats are linked to something called the Black Door. Similar to the Upside Down in Stranger Things, these other worlds in Locke & Key create both physical risks and emotional pain for the characters. While the supernatural horror feels different in each series, neither show ignores the characters’ sadness, fear, or feelings of isolation.

What makes Locke & Key so enjoyable is its successful blend of elements from both Wednesday and Stranger Things. Locke & Key stands out as one of Netflix’s most emotionally complex fantasy series. The show deeply explores grief, particularly through Tyler’s journey with trauma and Kinsey’s efforts to overcome her fears. Even young Bode’s curiosity about Keyhouse is connected to his desire to remember his father. Importantly, the show’s fantastical elements enhance its emotional impact rather than overshadowing it.

Beyond its strong characters, Locke & Key deserves more praise for its carefully developed story. The show’s magic system, based around mysterious keys, is incredibly imaginative – one of the best in Netflix’s fantasy lineup. Over three seasons, the series consistently builds upon the history of the keys and the Locke family’s connection to them, but never at the expense of the characters. This allows the story to feel fully resolved, something many other Netflix fantasy shows struggle to accomplish.

Though shows like Stranger Things and Wednesday became huge hits, Locke & Key offered a compelling fantasy story on Netflix that didn’t get nearly as much recognition. It’s a truly original series with heartfelt stories and a wonderfully creative world, and deserves to be much more than just a hidden gem.
