This group focuses on the characters’ strengths and bravery, not their limitations. They often make light of their health issues and past surgeries – for example, Sam can’t drive after eye surgery and relies on a golf cart to get around. Wally even quips that their only defense against monsters might be their mid-century modern furniture if the monsters are easily scared.
Moving through tight, dark spaces is difficult for them now, and they often grunt and groan with the effort. However, these struggles fade in comparison to moments where their strengths really stand out. Sam, a retired engineer, possesses a wealth of knowledge that surpasses even those much younger than him, though his daughter, Claire (Jena Malone), is quickly gaining similar expertise.
Judy, played by Alfre Woodard, came of age facing discrimination, so she’s not intimidated by conflict or weapons. Beyond that, her background as a journalist has given her strong investigative abilities that more inexperienced characters are still developing.
Wally, a respected retired doctor, feels uniquely equipped to make a difference, and his own serious illness has given him a renewed sense of purpose. The story shows that it’s not how long you’ve lived, but how you live each day, and that true understanding comes with experience.
The Boroughs Makes a Statement About Ageism in Hollywood
I’ve noticed a really cool trend lately – shows are finally putting older characters front and center! It’s not totally new, we’ve had amazing stuff like Grace & Frankie, The Kominsky Method, Only Murders in the Building, and The Old Man already. What I love is that these shows don’t talk down to older people, they make fun of getting older with them, and it’s actually really refreshing and empowering to watch.
However, The Boroughs perhaps does the best job of portraying its main characters as truly heroic. They’re strong, clever, and willing to handle situations themselves, even when others doubt them. Unlike characters in shows like The Old Man or Only Murders in the Building – who often have military experience or rely on help from younger people – these characters are self-reliant and tackle challenges independently.
This highlights Hollywood’s tendency to overlook older actors in heroic roles, often limiting them to voice work like Patrick Stewart as Professor X in the X-Men films. The characters in Boroughs challenge this by demonstrating that courage, resilience, and experience aren’t diminished by age or physical challenges.
Older actors may not be suited for physically demanding roles like action heroes, although there are exceptions. However, they excel at leading compelling dramas. The recent show The Boroughs demonstrated that we shouldn’t underestimate the talent and range of senior actors, or assume their opportunities are limited to a few well-known names or just the action genre.
Older actors are proving their talent on television. Similar to how Stranger Things showed that young performers are capable of amazing things when given the chance, older actors deserve to be recognized for their abilities. While a team of “elder Avengers” might not be in the works, the show The Boroughs demonstrates that quality television – even science fiction – can now feature compelling characters over the age of 70 without relegating them to minor roles.
