Son Heung-min is focused on playing in the 2026 World Cup, but he also dreams of starting a family someday.
Heung-min, 33, told Us Weekly that he’s starting to feel ready to start a family, but is keeping an open mind about the future. He admitted he loves children and isn’t ruling anything out. He shared this while celebrating his partnership as Hyundai’s Global Brand Ambassador.
This is a bit different from what LAFC’s Heung-min Son shared with The Guardian a few years back. In a 2019 interview, he remembered advice his father had given him.
As someone who’s navigated a lot of life transitions, I always say that when you find your life partner and start a family, your priorities naturally shift. For me, family – my spouse and children – always comes first. But I also believe it’s possible to maintain that passion for your career, whatever that may be. My goal is to continue performing at my best, and that means ensuring my work remains a top priority, right alongside the people I love.
If and when Heung-min has kids, don’t count on him to be his son or daughter’s soccer coach.
“No chance, no chance,” he told Us with a laugh. “This, I can give you a straight answer.”
Heung-min continued, “I’ll be a good team dad. Good [dad] looking after my kids.”
Before he became a global soccer sensation, Heung-min remembers being driven to training by his father, Son Woong-jung, who himself was a professional soccer player.
Heung-min Son cherishes the memories of training with his father, a former footballer. They practiced relentlessly, every single day, and while the sessions were demanding, he remembers them as a joyful time spent together. His father often pushed him hard, frustrated with his performance, but Son believes that tough love ultimately led him to where he is today. He hopes to share these experiences and lessons with future generations.
I’m a huge fan of Heung-min Son, and it’s amazing to see him not only supporting Hyundai’s global campaign, “Next Starts Now,” but also really getting behind their “Be There With Hyundai” program. It’s so inspiring – the program helps young athletes chase their dreams and stay passionate about their sports, and I love that Heung-min is a part of that.
When he has the chance to interact with a next generation of soccer players, his advice is simple.
He encouraged everyone to relax and savor the present. “We often get caught up in working hard and forget to enjoy the simple moments,” he explained. He wants to remind future generations to prioritize having fun and embracing life.
With World Cup excitement building, South Korea’s captain, Heung-min Son, is encouraging new fans to start watching now.
He urged people not to delay watching, saying they’d regret missing it and having to wait another four years. He highlighted the incredible talent of the new players and encouraged viewers to support South Korea.
