James Cameron recently shared a surprising story with The Hollywood Reporter about the making of his 1989 film, The Abyss. A rat used to demonstrate the movie’s special water technology nearly drowned, and Cameron, determined to save it and maintain the film’s “No Animals Were Harmed” certification, actually gave the rat CPR. This act of quick thinking, he says, marked the start of an unexpected bond with the little creature, whom he affectionately nicknamed “Beanie.”
Beanie and I became very close after I rescued him. We felt like brothers. He’d often sit with me while I was writing the script for Terminator 2, and he lived a long, full life. Surprisingly, he didn’t seem bothered by the experience, even though the film has been banned in the U.K. due to concerns about how animals were treated.
It seems people in the U.K. missed the fact that James Cameron actually rescued the rat from the movie set. It just goes to show how much the acclaimed director values the film’s image – he went to incredible lengths to save the animal! That’s dedication.
James Cameron, the director of The Terminator, has a history of going to great lengths to ensure his films are successful. For example, during the making of Titanic, he gave up his own salary when the movie went over budget, rather than cutting scenes to save money. He also wisely decided to let negative publicity surrounding the film fade naturally, instead of trying to fight it. These risks proved worthwhile, as Titanic ultimately won Best Picture and remained the highest-grossing film for twelve years.
Beyond a near-incident involving a rat, the production of The Abyss faced several serious issues. As reported by Syfy, James Cameron narrowly avoided drowning during filming. He was at the bottom of a large underwater set when his breathing regulator malfunctioned, causing him to ingest a lot of water. Cameron had to physically hit the safety diver assisting him to escape and reach the surface.
Filming was incredibly demanding on the cast and crew, who worked extremely long hours – reportedly 70 hours a week for six months – and experienced significant emotional strain. The divers on set suffered physical effects too, including skin burns from the chlorine and even hair discoloration. If watching the James Cameron film feels intense, imagine actually creating it.
I was amazed to learn that James Cameron actually performed CPR on a rat while making The Abyss! That really shows his dedication. It’s a good thing he didn’t let an animal suffer for the sake of testing the movie’s technology. If you’re interested, you can now watch this sci-fi thriller with a Disney+ subscription.
