It’s less about the acting world and more about a personal journey of self-discovery under immense pressure.

10. Heart of Stone (2023)

I think there was a really fun premise hiding within Heart of Stone: a rookie computer expert on a team of spies who’s secretly a super-spy like James Bond. But to really make that work, you need an actor who can play unassuming and even a little clumsy, so when they suddenly spring into action, it’s a surprise – and they can get some laughs while being awkward. Think Bob Odenkirk in Nobody – that’s the vibe you need. It’s a shame they cast Gal Gadot, because the movie kind of abandons that clever idea after about 40 minutes. It just becomes another standard action blockbuster about artificial intelligence, covering the same ground as Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning but without Tom Cruise’s energy or any interesting thoughts about how CGI and practical effects work together. Honestly, the AI in Heart of Stone, called ‘The Heart’, is treated as simply a good thing, and the action sequences, sadly, are mostly just uninspired CGI.

9. Lift (2024)

At this point, people like to make easy jokes about how bad Netflix movies feel like they were extruded from some data port by a malfunctioning AI, but Kevin Hart’s downmarket Ocean’s 11 knockoff Lift really seemed like it was assembled from a checklist of things all Netflix blockbusters must possess, including…

A generic title of no more than three words.
Bland digital photography without style or panache.
Big-name stars who are not too big to take a low-effort, high-salary paycheck.
A plot that involves a bunch of international locations in countries where Netflix sells subscriptions.
At least one sequence where they clearly never went to said international location and shot the entire thing on an obvious green screen instead.

8. Trigger Warning (2024)

In Trigger Warning, Jessica Alba stars as a highly skilled CIA agent who comes home to find a plot involving a valuable mine and a dishonest senator. With Redbox gone, movies like this end up on Netflix, suggested to viewers who watched something similar, like Rebel Ridge. (But even if you liked Rebel Ridge, this movie isn’t worth watching.)

7. Red Notice (2021)

Up until its release, Red Notice was Netflix’s most costly film, starring Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot in a hunt for a valuable artifact. Despite the stars’ charisma, the script failed to give them any compelling dialogue or character development. One scene, set during a bullfight, is particularly jarring – it’s visually unappealing and clearly fake. It doesn’t even appear that Ryan Reynolds and Dwayne Johnson were filmed together during the sequence, and there’s no attempt to use a real bull or bullfighting arena.

6. Your Place or Mine (2023)

Okay, so I just finished watching this new streaming movie, and honestly, it felt like the filmmakers got Reese Witherspoon and Ashton Kutcher on board, then just…stopped thinking. The plot is so flimsy – Reese’s character travels across the country for a one-week accounting class? Seriously? And her babysitter cancels, so she asks her totally incompatible best friend (Ashton) to come watch her son? It’s just weirdly written. There’s even another friend with kids conveniently hanging around who could have easily helped! It’s those little things that just felt off. But, you know, a movie can overcome a weak plot with great writing or chemistry between the leads. This one? Nope. Every scene felt like a rough first take, and honestly, I wasn’t even rooting for Reese and Ashton to end up together – they just didn’t click! It’s a shame, because I like both of them, but this movie just didn’t work for me.

5. The Electric State (2025)

There was a lot of talk about the $320 million Netflix spent on this science fiction film directed by the Russo brothers – and it probably wasn’t worth it. Even if it had cost half as much, it would still feel like a waste of money. The Electric State simply doesn’t look good; the characters and visuals are bland and uninspired. The story follows a young woman (Millie Bobby Brown) traveling across a desolate, robot-filled landscape to find her brother, with help from Chris Pratt, who seems to be playing a familiar action hero role with an odd haircut. The movie’s core story, based on a book I haven’t read, doesn’t make much sense. You might be able to overlook a strange story if the movie was at least visually appealing, but unfortunately, it isn’t.

4.Rebel Moon — Part Two: The Scargiver

The first part of Zack Snyder’s sci-fi film, released at the end of 2023, was enjoyable because it focused on assembling a team and exploring strange worlds with unique creatures and technology. However, the second part, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, is essentially one long, drawn-out battle. Snyder’s overuse of slow motion makes it feel slow and repetitive – I actually had to try watching it three times because the constant action kept making me fall asleep. On the plus side, the film delivers on its promise of intense, violent encounters. I suspect the director’s cut, Rebel Moon – Chapter Two: Curse of Forgiveness, will be an improvement, but I’m not in any hurry to find out.

3. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

I don’t have professional experience in real estate, city planning, or politics, but I’m skeptical about a plan to sell an abandoned, isolated town to wealthy young people who want to create a trendy spot with a comic book shop and a brunch cafe. It’s hard to imagine who would actually visit – and the only current resident is, well, Leatherface! Considering he’s the villain in The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, I doubt he’s a big brunch fan.

Also, slasher films often show killers moving silently, even when they’re large and should be noisy. But wouldn’t operating a chainsaw make that impossible? They’re pretty loud, after all.

2. Diana: The Musical

When the Broadway musical about Princess Diana was originally scheduled to premiere, the pandemic forced its creators to record it without an audience instead. Though it eventually opened on Broadway in late 2021, that recording first appeared on Netflix, seemingly as a way to promote the show.

Instead, it quickly became a source of ironic fascination. Compared to the famously strange Cats movie, parts of Diana: The Musical feel even more illogical – especially the rhyming of words like “thrilla” and “Manila” with “Diana” and “Camilla.” Rather than treating the tragic story of Princess Diana with seriousness, the musical adopts a surprisingly cheerful tone. It’s hard to believe so many people approved of a song where Prince Charles sings “Darling, I’m holding my son, so let me say ‘Jolly well done!'” Diana closed on Broadway after only 33 performances, but Diana: The Musical will remain available on Netflix forever.

1. Marmaduke (2022)

I can honestly say I’ve never seen a more visually unpleasant animated movie than Marmaduke. It feels less like a creative project and more like something made simply to fulfill a contractual obligation or, frankly, to launder money. It’s baffling, because despite the terrible animation, the movie boasts a surprisingly talented voice cast – including J.K. Simmons, David Koechner, and Pete Davidson. It makes you wonder if they saw the script or any of the character designs, or if Netflix offered them an unbelievable incentive. Simply put, Marmaduke is awful. I wouldn’t even subject my childhood bullies to it – and they used to write songs about my… less-than-ideal habits, which, ironically, was more imaginative than this movie.
