LAUFEY: A Matter Of Time (AWAL)
Verdict: Jazz prodigy branches out
Through three albums during her musical journey that started while she was on scholarship at Boston’s esteemed Berklee College of Music, Laufey continues to polish her unique fusion of 1940s-era jazz and introspective songwriting. A modern-day swing sensation hailing from Iceland, this multicultural vocalist adds a sharp edge to her bebop tunes without compromising on elegance.
The artist known as ‘Lay-Vay’ remains deeply influenced by Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan, yet she ventured beyond her familiar territory last year, collaborating with Beabadoobee and Noah Kahan.
On her latest album, A Matter Of Time, one of Taylor Swift’s collaborators is Aaron Dessner, an American musician who inspired her to delve deeper into her folk side during the creation of her lockdown albums, Folklore and Evermore.
With Laufey’s frequent collaborator Spencer Stewart joining forces once more, “A Matter Of Time” delves deeper into intricate emotions, contrasting the exuberant portrayal of youthful romance in the 2023 release, “Bewitched”. At just 26 years old, Laufey admits, “People may anticipate a superficial veneer of feminine attire and love songs. However, I don’t always maintain such polished manners.
With twin sister Junia Lin on violin, it’s business as usual…at first.
Clockwork finds Laufey falling head-over-heels for an old acquaintance.
As an ardent admirer of Bossa-nova tunes, I find myself likening the exhilaration of a fresh romance to the dizzy sensation atop a lofty edifice. In the verses of ‘Lover Girl’, the independent spirit within me appears to be absent. Yet, it’s somewhat humbling to confess, I can’t help but succumb to this state of vulnerability.

As her mind strays, the situation grows more ominous. With a sweet yet sinister tone, she declares to us on the song “Silver Lining”, which features guitar tones reminiscent of Richard Hawley and lyrics that echo Alice Cooper’s dark sentiments.
On Tough Luck, she tells one of her exes: ‘I’ll break it first, I’ve had enough.’
Hailing from Reykjavík, she also contributes to singing a part of Forget-Me-Not in Icelandic. Moreover, there are additional excursions on the two collaborations with Dessner: Castle In Hollywood and A Cautionary Tale share similarities with Dessner’s compositions co-written with Taylor.
Even though Laufey’s core remains deeply rooted in jazz, she’s starting to exhibit signs that she might evolve into a versatile artist, showcasing a wider range of artistic talents.
BEST OF THE NEW RELEASES…

RUDIMENTAL: Rudim3ntal (Columbia)
Before the performances at this weekend’s Reading and Leeds festivals, the dance group from London has been consistently collaborating with rising artists as well as established acts. Nottingham-based soul artist Liam Bailey features on two tracks, while Rag’n’Bone Man contributes his pop-soul voice to Nights Like These. Jess Glynne, who previously sang on These Days in 2018, returns for the breakup track Back To Me, and even a rap (on London’s Burning) is included by Idris Elba.

JON BATISTE: Big Money (Verve)
As an ardent admirer, I’m thrilled to share that the esteemed Oscar-winning composer, who graced the prestigious Best Score category for the Disney/Pixar film Soul in 2021, has hinted at a future venture into the realm of pop music. Though not a guarantee of financial riches, it promises to be a remarkable exploration of Batiste’s deeply rooted blues influences from New Orleans.
The title track echoes the rhythmic prowess of Mississippi blues legend Bo Diddley, while Lean On My Love is a captivating ballad that features the soulful vocals of R&B sensation Andra Day. Moreover, a duet titled Lonely Avenue, partnered with Randy Newman, adds an extra layer of allure to this upcoming album.

THE ROYSTON CLUB: Songs For The Spine (Modern Sky)
If the reunion of Oasis sparks a new surge of British guitar bands, The Royston Club might be one of those that profit. Hailing from Wrexham, this four-piece band’s second album on Modern Sky Records showcases their vitality and promise. The first track, Shivers, echoes the intensity of The Smiths, while Cariad and Spinning call to mind Radiohead during their Bends phase. The Ballad Of Glen Campbell pays tribute to the lasting charm of a country music icon.
