We’ve got a lot on our plate before we can even think about Atlantis. First, we need to stock up on supplies and find some friends. When we started checking the Stargate addresses in the system, it quickly became clear just how bad things are out there. This Wraith species… they’ve really torn the galaxy apart. They’re basically like alien vampires, draining the life right out of people. It’s terrifying, but we have to be prepared.
Okay, so this movie introduces a really creepy alien race – the Wraith – who basically farm humans for food. They’ve got this chilling strategy of hibernating for centuries, letting the human population grow, then waking up for a feast. The plot kicks off when a small group of Wraith decide to grab a quick snack – a few members of the Atlantis team! Naturally, Colonel Sheppard isn’t having it and leads a dangerous rescue mission to bring his people home. It’s a pretty straightforward premise, but the execution is what makes it work.
While saving his people, he accidentally awakened a massive Wraith ship. This triggered a galaxy-wide awakening of the Wraith, who began attacking human settlements. Atlantis fought back, trying to protect as many people as possible, but struggling with limited power and dwindling resources, they were barely able to defend themselves, let alone others.
The show centers around freeing a galaxy from a hostile alien race determined to control it. Like SG-1, it featured characters battling the Goa’uld and weakening their grip on the Milky Way, and it used a familiar episodic format.
Each episode of the show took place on a different planet, each with its own self-contained story. Over the course of the series, these stories built towards a larger, season-long plot that often ended with a major conflict. The main team consistently featured a leader, Colonel Sheppard, who approached challenges with a relaxed style and a sense of humor.
Major Samantha Carter, an Air Force officer, serves as second-in-command to O’Neill. Both the SG-1 and Atlantis teams included a doctor, and each had another key specialist: SG-1 featured an archaeologist, while the Atlantis team included astrophysicist Dr. Rodney McKay. Sheppard also had a fellow officer on his Atlantis team.
Teyla, like Teal’c, offered valuable knowledge about the galaxy and, as a leader, assisted with diplomacy. When Ronon joined the team, he served a similar purpose, also mirroring Teal’c’s role as a warrior dedicated to fighting the Wraith. Despite following a familiar formula and maintaining recognizable team interactions, Atlantis still felt new and brought a unique style to the Stargate universe.
Jason Momoa’s Rise to Fame Brought Attention to Stargate: Atlantis
Jason Momoa has become incredibly well-known thanks to his acting career. He’s been in many highly-rated TV shows and famously played Aquaman, the king of Atlantis, in the DC movies. Now, as people explore his earlier roles and Amazon plans a new series, one of his past projects is getting a lot of attention.
In Stargate: Atlantis, Jason Momoa played Ronon, the sole survivor of his race, who had been wiped out by the Wraith. During the second season episode “Runner,” Colonel Sheppard’s team finds Ronon while he’s on the run. Two particularly cruel Wraith had been tracking him thanks to a device they implanted in him, due to his strength and ability to survive.
Ronon was relentlessly pursued across the galaxy, with his enemies killing anyone who assisted him. He lived with the weight of being the sole survivor of his people and the deaths of those who had aided him. Similarly, Teal’c, once a high-ranking warrior for the Goa’uld, felt responsible for the terrible things he’d done and dedicated himself to making up for them.
The Atlantis team finds Ronon and offers to help him get rid of an implant and escape the Wraith who are chasing him. After a difficult surgery without anesthesia, Ronon begins to trust Colonel Sheppard and Dr. Beckett, and joins them on the Atlantis team. Because he’s spent years traveling from planet to planet while being hunted by the Wraith, he has valuable insights into their tactics and knows the locations of various civilizations and potential allies.
Spending time with Teyla helped Ronon learn to connect with the people around them. He quickly became a valuable asset to the team, always prepared with a weapon and fiercely loyal to those who saved him. Many viewers see similarities between Ronon and Teal’c, especially when comparing Stargate SG-1 to Stargate: Atlantis.
Teal’c and Ronon are both incredibly skilled fighters and physically strong. If they ever went head-to-head, it would be a very close match – they were evenly matched, and likely would have kept fighting if Colonel Carter hadn’t intervened.
