Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey Will Still Be Epic
Nolan isn’t approaching this project casually. He recently shared how previous work helped him get ready to tell a story as well-known as The Odyssey.
Nolan explains there’s a lot of expectation when adapting a classic like The Odyssey. He felt the weight of wanting to deliver an epic film that would satisfy everyone. From his experience with The Dark Knight trilogy, he realized audiences primarily want a faithful and heartfelt adaptation – they want to see that the director truly committed to doing the story justice and created the best possible film.
The movie features Tom Holland as Telemachus, the son of Odysseus, alongside Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Jon Bernthal, Charlize Theron, and Zendaya. Last year, director Nolan spoke about the difficulties of making a film based on The Odyssey.
He described the film as deeply elemental, explaining that a lot of it was filmed at sea. He’d spent the last four months shooting on the water, using real waves and locations to immerse the actors who played Odysseus’ crew. He emphasized the ocean’s powerful and unpredictable nature – both beautiful and frightening – and how they aimed to portray the immense difficulty and sheer bravery of ancient sea voyages into the unknown.
The Odyssey opens in theaters on July 17.
