According to the officer’s report, the accused grabbed the victim and hit them in the face with an open hand. The victim reacted by lowering and holding their head. The accused then stood over the victim and a friend. The accused moved toward the victim again, who then tried to move away.
He explained that the physical contact was unwanted and either inappropriate, aggressive, or hostile. The victim did not agree to being struck, which caused them pain, and the accused reportedly used taunting or inflammatory language to try and provoke a response.
Joey Chestnut’s representative said he’s sorry for getting involved in the recent interaction and that it was taken the wrong way. He always tries to have fun with fans, but some inappropriate comments were made that he responded to. He’s committed to avoiding similar situations in the future.
According to his lawyer, Mario Massillamany, the client accepted responsibility for the situation and resolved it by pleading guilty to a minor battery charge – a low-level misdemeanor under Indiana law.
After admitting wrongdoing, Chestnut received his probation conditions on April 20th. Court records show his probation will last until October 16th.
As a huge fan, I just learned that if Joey wants to compete in Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest this year, he actually needs to get permission from his probation officer first! It’s crazy to think something like that could even affect his ability to compete, but apparently it does.
Chestnut has impressively won the patriotic eating contest 17 times. He even won in 2025, making a comeback after being disqualified the previous year.
