Once Peter Jackson, a dedicated fan of the comics, joined the project, he suggested using motion capture animation – a technique he’d successfully employed in his 2005 film, King Kong. This approach, blending voice acting, motion capture, and traditional animation, would give the film a distinct visual style, differentiating it from earlier Tintin adaptations. However, it would also allow the filmmakers to stay true to the original comic book character designs in a way a live-action movie couldn’t.

The film spent nearly another ten years stuck in development, facing numerous unexpected problems. Both Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson were in high demand, and their existing projects often delayed pre-production for Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull and Jackson’s adaptation of The Lovely Bones. Unexpectedly, disagreements between Spielberg and Jackson about which stories to tell also caused setbacks. Eventually, they settled on a combination of The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure, but the script continued to be revised by multiple writers – Steven Moffat, Edgar Wright, and Joe Cornish – particularly due to the 2007-08 Writers’ Strike.

Just a month before filming was scheduled to start, Universal Studios pulled out of the project because similar movies hadn’t made much money. After getting Paramount and Sony’s Columbia Pictures to agree to co-produce, filming using motion capture technology was completed in 2009 after only a few months. Post-production work finished in September 2011, paving the way for the release of The Adventures of Tintin later that year.

Tintin is the Closest Spiritual Successor to Indiana Jones

Considering the similarities between Tintin, the famous comic book character, and Indiana Jones, the adventurous archaeologist from film, it’s not surprising that Spielberg used his classic movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, as a model for a new exciting adventure. Both Tintin and Raiders draw on the same kind of exciting, old-fashioned stories about young adventurers traveling the world, solving mysteries, and discovering lost places and treasures.

Both Indiana Jones and Tintin operate in a classic adventure style, similar to stories from the early to mid-1900s. They each solve ancient mysteries by exploring rundown temples and dodging dangerous traps. Their adventures are often a mix of thrilling action and lighthearted comedy, balancing life-or-death situations with funny moments and exciting chases. These high-stakes stories move quickly, and both heroes depend on their smarts and quick thinking – along with help from their unique and dependable friends. Tintin has Captain Haddock and his dog Snowy, while Indy relies on companions like Marcus Brody and Sallah.

Both movies share traits with classic film noir, like puzzling plots, sharp, world-weary conversations, and dramatic use of light and shadow. The Tintin films, however, don’t explore complex relationships because the stories feature very few significant female characters. Despite this, it reinforces Spielberg’s point that The Adventures of Tintin is essentially a family-friendly version of Indiana Jones.

Despite some believing Steven Spielberg’s Tintin movie is a small-scale adaptation of a Belgian comic, it’s actually a key part of his history of making hugely successful films. The Secret of the Unicorn isn’t just a technical achievement with motion capture; it feels most like a spiritual successor to the Indiana Jones movies in Spielberg’s entire career. Considering Spielberg’s next project, a revisit to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, now is the perfect time for Tintin to return to the big screen. Given the challenges Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson faced to get the first film, The Adventures of Tintin, made, it’s time the movie received the recognition it deserves. The 2011 adaptation was an adventurous film that was ahead of its time and a complete masterpiece, and it’s exciting that it’s finally getting a sequel.
