Andy Moura plays Brander Lawson, a detective working on the planet Janix, and his character provides a unique viewpoint on the growing threat of the Empire. Lawson is part of the local police force, which operates independently from the Empire, creating conflict and a difficult moral dilemma when Imperial troops arrive and begin their occupation. Within this visually stunning animated space opera, Moura delivers a realistic and relatable performance as an honest officer forced to answer to corrupt leaders. The character resonated with Moura, sharing similar motivations to the role that recently earned him his first Oscar nomination.
This year, Wagner Moura received an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for his role in Kleber Mendonça Filho’s critically acclaimed thriller, The Secret Agent. He played Armando, a researcher fleeing the oppressive Brazilian military dictatorship of the 1970s. I’ve been a huge fan of Wagner Moura for years, and it’s amazing to see how consistently great he’s been. He was a big star in Brazil with the Elite Squad films, and then started getting noticed internationally when he was in Elysium with Matt Damon. But for me, he really blew up after playing Pablo Escobar in Narcos – that role was incredible! Since then, he’s been getting Oscar nominations and landing leading roles in some huge movies. It’s been awesome to watch his career take off.
Wagner Moura recently starred in Alex Garland’s film Civil War and showcased his voice acting talents in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. His work in Maul: Shadow Lord continues a pattern of strong performances throughout his career.
