The Corporalki are at the top – they can heal or harm the human body and are Ravka’s most powerful fighters. Below them are the Etherealki, like Alina, who can summon natural energies like fire and water. The Materialki, often underestimated, can work with solid objects to build, strengthen, or change them. While magic is a core part of the world of Shadow and Bone, not everyone accepts it.
Ravka has a strict social hierarchy that leads to unfair treatment and wastes people’s talents. Like the districts in The Hunger Games which each have a specific purpose, the different types of Grisha magic users are further divided based on their unique abilities. Despite this, Alina quickly proves to be exceptional and must forge her own path to success, much like Katniss does in the arena. But instead of fighting a tyrannical government, Alina’s mission is to restore light to her country, which has been devastated by war, and defeat dangerous monsters.
Shadow And Bone Deserved Just As Much Success As Its Page-To-Screen Contemporaries
The Netflix Adaptation Was Struck Down Before It Could Reach Its Peak
Although Shadow and Bone drew inspiration from popular series like Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, it didn’t achieve the same level of success. While Harry Potter is getting a new TV series on HBO and another Hunger Games movie is on the way, Shadow and Bone was unfortunately canceled by Netflix after just two seasons, leaving fans with unresolved plotlines and a frustrating cliffhanger. The cancellation is particularly disappointing because the show clearly had a lot of promise.
Before Netflix cancelled the show completely, a spinoff series following the popular characters from Six of Crows was in the works. There was also plenty more story material within the Grishaverse to continue the fantasy series. However, adapting books for television is often challenging, and even well-made shows frequently end prematurely. Despite this, Shadow and Bone‘s creative magic system and clever observations about society make it a worthwhile watch for anyone who enjoys fantasy, dystopian stories, or simply a good time.
