Though often hailed as one of the greatest horror anthology series of the 2000s, Masters of Horror‘s successor, Fear Itself, quickly faded from memory, despite some genuinely unsettling episodes. The show was created by horror veteran Mick Garris and featured episodes directed by well-known filmmakers like Brad Anderson (Session 9), Stuart Gordon (From Beyond), and Mary Harron (Pet Sematary).
While every episode of the show is enjoyable, Ernest Dickerson’s “Something with Bite,” from Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight, is particularly noteworthy. This fresh and unsettling werewolf story demonstrates that Fear Itself was just as effective at breathing new life into classic horror themes as the well-known Masters of Horror series.
6. Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams
Based on the works of Blade Runner author Philip K. Dick, this 2017 series features a strong cast including Jack Reynor (known from Midsommar) and Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad). Although Dick was often a pessimistic writer – famously known for Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? – Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams was often surprisingly hopeful.
While the sci-fi series Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams explored dark, futuristic worlds like Black Mirror, it offered more moments of humor and hope. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to keep it on the air, and it was cancelled after just ten episodes.
5. Monsterland
It’s not shocking that Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams wasn’t renewed—shows with a cyberpunk style are notoriously costly to make, and their complex stories can turn off viewers who aren’t already fans. But the cancellation of Monsterland after just one season is more puzzling.
Inspired by Nathan Ballingrud’s collection of short stories, North American Lake Monsters: Stories, this series travels across the US, exploring different kinds of local horrors. Featuring a talented cast including Kelly Marie Tran, Bill Camp, and Kaitlyn Dever, it had all the makings of a beloved cult hit.
Despite having a smart and interesting idea that could have led to many more seasons, Monsterland was cancelled after only one season. However, the episodes from that first season are still enjoyable and worth checking out, even though the show isn’t widely known.
4. Slasher
Most of the shows on this list are anthologies, where each episode features a completely new cast of characters. But the Canadian horror series Slasher is unique—it introduces a new set of characters every season, and each season tells their story over eight episodes.
Each season of Slasher features a different location. The show started in a small town, then moved to a summer camp, and later to a secluded island. These settings are all familiar tropes often used in slasher films.
Each season of this show plays out like an extended slasher film, featuring a mystery, shocking deaths, and an anonymous killer. Considering how popular slashers are now – even disguised as psychological thrillers – this show deserves more credit for paving the way.
3. Inside No. 9
I’m a huge fan of Inside No. 9, and it’s honestly hard to describe! People call it a dark comedy, but that doesn’t even begin to cover it. Each episode is so different – sometimes it’s genuinely terrifying and shocking, other times it’s incredibly touching, and then other times it’s just pure, silly fun. You really never know what you’re in for, which is part of what makes it so brilliant.
Despite being incredibly unpredictable, the TV show Inside No. 9 is surprisingly consistent in its quality as an anthology series.
Each episode of Inside No. 9 is surprisingly different, but consistently clever, original, and fresh, making it a standout anthology series. It’s a rare show that genuinely keeps viewers guessing, and a must-watch for fans of the anthology format.
2. Castle Rock
While It: Welcome to Derry is a standout Stephen King adaptation, it’s not the first horror series to bring his small-town stories to life. Hulu’s Castle Rock, a hidden gem with two seasons, cleverly used the setting of the fictional town to connect characters and events from many of King’s novels and films.
The show was a collection of stories that expanded on the world created in Stephen King’s books, offering a detailed and engaging fictional universe with hidden references for devoted fans. Unfortunately, despite its promising start, Castle Rock was cancelled too soon and largely faded from memory.
1. The Outer Limits
Although the original Outer Limits didn’t receive as much praise as The Twilight Zone, the show’s 1990s reboot is truly exceptional. This seven-season sci-fi series was brilliantly dark and cynical, offering clever stories that both inspired Black Mirror and stood up well against the multiple revivals of The Twilight Zone.
