モンスターバースは、35年間見られなかったゴジラシリーズのひねりをからかっている

警告: Monarch: Legacy of Monsters シーズン 2、エピソード 8 のネタバレ

In the series Monarch: Legacy of the Monsters, Isabel Simmons, played by Amber Midthunder, sets up a new direction for the Monsterverse. The character, introduced in the fifth episode of the second season, is revealed to be the daughter of Walter Simmons, the primary human villain from Godzilla vs. Kong. This is a storyline the Godzilla franchise hasn’t explored in over three decades.

Demian Bechar played Walter Simmons, the man who created Mechagodzilla. He did so by using the head of the defeated King Ghidorah as a base for the new monster. His daughter, Maia (played by Eiza Gonzalez), initially helped him, even leading a Monarch team into the Hollow Earth, but later betrayed him.

Both Simmons characters died in the ending of Godzilla vs. Kong. However, the story isn’t finished with the Simmons family. The new Monarch series on Apple TV has revealed that Walter Simmons had another daughter. She reached out to Bill Randa’s grandson in 2017—seven years before Mechagodzilla was built and her father died.

She’s also interested in the Titans, but it’s said she’s not collaborating with Apex. However, this might not be entirely true, as she previously worked with someone closely connected to Apex. It’s definitely clear, though, that her aims are different from Apex’s. In fact, what she hopes to achieve would be completely new for the Monsterverse.

That said, it wouldn’t be completely new for the Godzilla franchise as a whole.

Isabel Simmons Wants To Change The Past

In the seventh episode of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters season 2, Isabel revealed her plan to Kentaro. She understands the secrets of Axis Mundi and how time functions within it, and intends to use this knowledge to reverse the events of G-Day – the massive 2014 battle between Godzilla and the MUTOs.

Essentially, she’s trying to change the past by traveling through time and undoing a pivotal event in the history of the Monsterverse. This might seem far-fetched, but Kurt Russell’s character, Lee Shaw, was able to communicate with his younger self while stuck in Axis Mundi back in 1962, which demonstrates that the strange distortions of time within that realm actually allow people to alter what’s already happened.

It’s still unclear exactly how she plans to succeed, but since her team stole Titan X’s egg, it likely plays a key role. She might think that placing the egg inside Axis Mundi will trigger a series of events that prevent G-Day from happening.

Humans Changed The Past In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah

Although Isabel’s plan might seem strange for a series about huge monsters, the idea of time travel isn’t new to the franchise. The 1991 film Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah also used this concept. Similar to Isabel in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, the characters in that film thought the world would be better if Godzilla had never existed.

This happened mostly because of the Futurians, aliens who tricked everyone into believing Godzilla would cause a disaster. Believing the lie, humans decided they needed to travel back in time and prevent Godzilla from ever existing.

With this goal in mind, the team journeyed back to the moment Godzilla – originally a creature called Godzillasaurus – was exposed to the nuclear blast that turned him into a monster. However, they were unaware that the Futurians had used this same time travel opportunity to bring King Ghidorah into existence.

Okay, so the original plan was for this creature, Godzillasaurus, to become Godzilla way back in 1944. But things went wrong – he got seriously hurt fighting American troops. Fast forward to the present, and we need Godzilla to take on Ghidorah. The humans, desperate to get a Godzilla up and running, decided to force the transformation anyway, even though the original method didn’t work. They basically had to find a new way to give Godzillasaurus enough radiation to evolve, even if it wasn’t ideal.

The plan succeeded, but it backfired in an unexpected way. After Godzilla beat King Ghidorah, he turned on Japan, becoming a danger to the country. This led humans to build Mecha-King Ghidorah using the parts of the defeated monster. In a final battle, Mecha-King Ghidorah managed to force Godzilla to retreat, though it was destroyed in the process.

Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah Is An Important Lesson About Time Travel In Godzilla’s World

Although the details differ, the time travel plot in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah teaches us something important about altering the past. The 1991 movie shows that time travel didn’t just bring a new enemy, King Ghidorah, but also made Godzilla stronger and changed how he was depicted in later 1990s films.

After humans altered the past and injured him, Godzilla became more aggressive. This gave the filmmakers a story reason to move away from the heroic portrayal of Godzilla established in earlier films and return to his more menacing origins.

The Godzilla franchise has shown that altering the past is possible, but rarely leads to positive outcomes. While Isabel Simmons might try to change something in the Monsterverse’s history, it’s unlikely to truly stick – just like Godzilla still existed even after attempts to change the past in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah. G-Day is such a core event in the Monsterverse that undoing it would likely create problems for future movies and stories.

It’s likely that Isabel and Kentaro will repeat a past error, similar to what happened in Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah, and accidentally create an even greater threat to the Monsterverse. Their actions with Titan X’s egg could awaken something new, something that didn’t exist in the original timeline. This could set the stage for the emergence of a larger Titan threat in a possible third season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters.
