The TV show Spider-Noir offers a new spin on the classic Marvel hero. Instead of playing Peter Parker, actor Nicolas Cage portrays Ben Reilly, known as the Spider, in this version. Set in the 1930s, the Prime Video series presents a darker, more hard-boiled take on the web-slinging crime fighter in an alternate universe.
In a review for ScreenRant, Felipe Rangel highlighted Nicolas Cage’s performance in Spider-Noir as a career best. He noted that Cage is known for taking bold risks with his roles, and he brought that same energy to playing The Spider. Cage previously voiced the character in the animated film Into the Spider-Verse, which was executive produced by the creators of the live-action series, Phil Lord and Chris Miller.
As a huge fan of the series, I really appreciated what Rangel said about the visual style. He feels, and I totally agree, that Spider-Noir absolutely needs to be seen in black and white. It just fits the whole noir vibe perfectly. This isn’t your typical Spider-Man adventure – it’s a genuinely gritty detective story, and the black and white really emphasizes that, even with the little bits of humor thrown in.
Despite getting positive reviews from critics, it will be interesting to see what general audiences think of Spider-Noir once the show is released. As the first live-action Spider-Man television series, it’s facing a lot of anticipation.
Sony Pictures Television and Prime Video are hoping Spider-Noir will help them figure out the best way to make future shows based on Spider-Man characters. They’re already developing projects featuring other versions of Spider-Man, as many different characters could star in their own series.
The cast of Spider-Noir includes Lamorne Morris as Robbie Robertson, Brendan Gleeson as Silvermane, and Li Jun Li as Cat Hardy. The series will also feature several Spider-Man villains, with Abraham Popoola playing Lonnie Lincoln, also known as Tombstone, and Jack Huston as Flint Marko, a.k.a. Sandman.
The upcoming release of Spider-Noir is connected to Sony’s larger plans for Spider-Man in 2026, including the theatrical release of Tom Holland’s Brand New Day on July 31st. Additionally, Marvel Studios will premiere season 2 of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man on Disney+ later this year.
Spider-Noir, presented in both classic black and white and full color, will premiere on MGM+ on Monday, May 25th. It will then be released globally on Prime Video on Wednesday, May 27th.
