After gaining a huge following online with fan-made trailers and over three million comments, Anna Todd’s novel was nearly finished in 2014 when she secured a publishing deal and sold the rights for a movie to Simon & Schuster. To prepare for publication, Todd made changes to distance the story from its origins, including altering character names – replacing “Harry Styles” with “Hardin Scott” and removing any identifying details. Despite criticism for weak character development, simple writing, and its portrayal of a harmful relationship, the novel still feels closely tied to its beginnings on the Wattpad platform, as reflected in its low 18% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Point Pleasant Began as a Dean x Castiel Fic
Jen Archer Wood’s paranormal romance novel, originally published online as Point Pleasant, began as a 2012 fanfiction inspired by the TV show Supernatural. The story, set in a classic American small town, blends Supernatural‘s spooky themes with southern gothic elements. It follows Ben Wiseheart, a successful horror author, who reconnects with a former love interest only to be pulled into a dangerous mystery. He’s forced to confront a legendary local creature from his childhood—a cryptid said to bring misfortune to anyone who crosses its path.
I discovered Point Pleasant a few years ago, and it completely captivated me! It takes the fascinating, but underused, dynamic between hunters and angels from Supernatural and runs with it, creating its own unique story. It was self-published in 2013 and quickly found a great audience on Amazon, especially among Supernatural fans – many of us treat it like an ‘alternate universe’ novel. While it didn’t become as huge as the show itself, it’s a really wonderful story on its own, and it just gets what makes Supernatural so special. It’s a true love letter to the show and everything its fans adore.
Heated Rivalry Series Began as a Stucky Fanfic
Rachel Reid’s hugely popular Game Changers series, which recently became a hit TV show, started as a 2018 novel called Game Changer. The book tells the story of Scott Hunter, a professional hockey player, and his romance with a barista named Kip. There’s been talk that the novel began as fanfiction pairing Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes from Captain America—often called “Stucky”—and while that’s partially true, its origins are more complex than many other published works that started as fanfiction.
While writing the early versions of Scott and Kip’s love story in 2016, Reid was busy raising her children and enjoying fanfiction. This led her to publish Game Changer on AO3. She initially lacked the confidence to share original work, and even didn’t know it was possible to post original stories on the site. Thinking AO3 was only for fanfiction, she reimagined her romance as an alternate universe story where Steve Rogers is a famous captain for the New York Rangers hockey team and Bucky works at a smoothie shop in Manhattan.
After receiving positive feedback, Reid finished revising her story by the end of 2016. She removed all references to fanfiction and Marvel characters and sent it to publishers. Six months later, they asked her to make further revisions, wanting it to feel less like fanfiction. Though she appreciates how writing fanfiction helped her gain confidence, Reid now feels embarrassed that the story originally included extra Marvel characters simply “for no reason.”
The Vorkosigan Saga is Inspired by Star Trek TOS
Ever since the first book in The Vorkosigan Saga, Shards of Honor, came out in 1986, people have wondered if it started as Star Trek fanfiction. This idea makes sense because author Lois McMaster Bujold has said she wrote fanfiction for Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek when she was younger. While rumors about other books—like the idea that Cassandra Claire’s City of Bones was a reworked Harry Potter story, or that Casey McQuiston’s Red, White and Royal Blue was inspired by fanfiction about Andrew Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg in The Social Network—seem less likely, Bujold says the truth is complex.
Bujold explains that her novel Shards of Honor started as a story idea for Star Trek: The Original Series, imagining a charming encounter between a female Starfleet officer and a Klingon captain. Like Star Trek, her Vorkosigan Saga novels explore themes of disability, identity, ethics, and relationships, and often feature a new planet in each installment. This series gained significant recognition and awards, far beyond what it might have as a fanfic. In fact, The Vorkosigan Saga grew from those early fan-written stories – a popular outlet for Star Trek fans that eventually paved the way for the widespread phenomenon of modern fanfiction.
His Royal Secret Duology Has Mutant DNA
Released in July 2016, His Royal Secret is the first book in a two-part M/M romance series. It tells the story of a Prince of Wales who is secretly gay and his passionate affair with a free-spirited foreign journalist. The author uses the pen name “Lilah Pace” and is also a New York Times bestselling author, but hasn’t confirmed or denied whether the book originated as fanfiction. Many readers have noticed striking similarities to a Charles/Erik fanfic, and one incident – where the author accidentally used the name “Charles” instead of a fictional replacement, “James” – seemed to confirm these suspicions.
Originally a lengthy fanfiction titled “Anarchy in the UK” published on Archive of Our Own (AO3) in 2013 by writer Yahtzee, this story explored a modern, realistic relationship between Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr. Following the birth of Prince William’s son, Yahtzee added a follow-up piece called “Born to Rule,” and then revised the entire story, removing all references to the X-Men, and published it as original fiction. Though the original fanfiction still exists on AO3, it’s been archived by the author, and neither Yahtzee nor Lilah Pace have published any new work since 2016.
SenLinYu Published Under Their AO3 Username
SenLinYu’s first novel, Alchemised, released in 2025, is a prime example of fanfiction evolving into original work. The dark fantasy, horror, and gothic romance novel quickly became a New York Times bestseller. It tells the story of Helena Marino, a former alchemist, as she pieces together her memories of a past civil war. Notably, SenLinYu—publishing under their Archive of Our Own (AO3) username—has openly acknowledged that Alchemised is a reimagining of their popular Draco and Hermione fanfiction, “Manacled.”
Originally published online between 2018 and 2019, “Manacled” was a lengthy fanfiction with 77 chapters and over 370,000 words. It reimagined the Harry Potter universe in a dark alternate reality where Voldemort won the war, enslaving those with Muggle heritage and eliminating the Order of the Phoenix—drawing inspiration from The Handmaid’s Tale. Before being removed from Archive of Our Own (AO3) on January 1, 2025, and before the release of Alchemised in September, it garnered over 10.3 million views and became incredibly popular within the HP fandom, particularly as a Draco/Hermione pairing. It was one of the most read fanfics and set a high standard for revised works in the fandom.
This Romantasy Was a Reylo Arranged Marriage Fic
The Hurricane Wars, the first book in a planned trilogy, draws inspiration from Southeast Asian mythology. It originally started as a popular fanfiction based on Star Wars, reimagining the relationship between Kylo Ren and Rey. The story centers on their forced marriage, intended to bring peace between the Rebel Alliance and the Empire. Before its 2023 publication, the story was removed from Archive of Our Own (AO3), and many believe it’s the same work as “Landscape with a Blur of Conquerors” by diasterisms. Written between 2017 and 2020, the complete fanfiction consists of 70 chapters and over 362,000 words.
I’m totally seeing a trend here! This book, The Hurricane Wars, really hits all my favorite tropes – you’ve got a lost prince, enemies who fall for each other, and that classic grumpy-meets-sunshine pairing. It’s set in this really cool world constantly battling hurricanes, and the magic system is super interesting. What’s even more amazing is that the author started with over sixty fanfics – seriously! – and turned them into a published novel. Seeing books like We’d Know By Then and The Love Hypothesis become bestsellers, and now The Hurricane Wars, just proves that a certain dynamic – especially when it involves characters reminiscent of Star Wars – really resonates with romance readers. It’s a winning formula!
Andy Weir’s One-Shot Was Added to Recent Editions
“Lacero” tells the backstory of Nolan Sorrento, the villain from Ready Player One, and explains how he came to work for IOI. Originally written as a fan story by Andy Weir and posted on his website, it was discovered by Ready Player One author Ernest Cline, who enjoyed it so much he made it official canon for the story’s universe.
The 2016 edition of Ready Player One, published by Subterranean Press, featured bonus content including a short story called “Lacero” by Andy Weir. While not in the original paperback or mass-market versions, “Lacero” appears in many special editions of Ernest Cline’s novel and can still be found on Weir’s website. Weir, a bestselling author who has even met Ridley Scott, says that having a fanfiction become official story material is an exceptionally rare achievement – something “almost no writers in history” get to experience.
Everyone Knows Fifty Shades is Twilight in Disguise
The Fifty Shades of Grey series is arguably the most well-known book to start as fanfiction. While it’s not for everyone, it’s a significant example of how fanfiction can become a published work. Originally based on the Twilight saga, it’s become notorious for its problematic and inaccurate depiction of BDSM and for romanticizing abusive dynamics.
Even though it sparked debate, the story received over 56,000 reviews before E.L. James removed it from FanFiction.net and temporarily posted it on her own website. Before finally deleting it to publish as an ebook in 2011, she started rewriting the story, changing the characters from the Twilight couple to Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele. While over 150 million copies have been sold globally and it launched a major franchise, Fifty Shades of Grey, despite its obvious imperfections, undeniably changed the landscape of modern fanfiction and demonstrated how reworked fan creations can achieve significant commercial success.
