Ant-Man isn’t a bad film, but it often feels like a smaller version of what could have been a grander, Edgar Wright production. Despite this, Michael Peña’s character Luis stands out as one of the most memorable and non-superpowered characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (read more here).
Ant-Man is alright, but it seems like a scaled-down version of what could have been an impressive Edgar Wright film. However, Michael Peña’s character Luis shines as one of the most captivating and non-superpowered characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (read more here).
29. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
In the upcoming Ant-Man versus Kang the Conqueror, it seems that even formidable Kang (portrayed by Jonathan Majors) deems Scott Lang as out of his depth. This seemingly lopsided matchup mirrors the movie itself: The quaint, low-stakes universe of the Ant-Man series, known for its clever humor and relatable characters, doesn’t stand a chance against the grand, multiversal saga unfolding in Marvel Phase 5. As a cinematic Marvel experience, it delivers. However, as a follow-up to the Ant-Man franchise, it falls short of expectations. Sadly, fans hoping for more of Michael Peña’s beloved character, Luis, will be disappointed, as he doesn’t make an appearance in this installment.
28. Ant-Man and the Wasp
The movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp” shines brightest when it emphasizes its compactness, showcasing Paul Rudd’s witty banter with his fellow actors, Michael Peña’s engaging monologues, and a heartwarming story centered around a family in pieces striving to mend their bonds once more. (For further details, check out this article.)
27. Captain Marvel
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Brie Larson’s Carol Danvers is arguably the most potent hero, but her movie could have benefited from a stronger emotional impact. However, it remains engaging due to two outstanding performances: Ben Mendelsohn as the cunning Skrull Talos and Samuel L. Jackson, along with his impressive de-aging visual effects, portraying the youthful Nick Fury. (For more details, read here.)
26. Black Widow
In 2021, Scarlett Johansson’s long-awaited solo film as Black Widow was released, but instead of taking center stage, she primarily supported the other members of her group of Russian superheroes who were known for their witty banter. This included David Harbour as the egotistical Red Guardian and Florence Pugh’s standout character, Yelena. Consequently, Black Widow might not have been the fitting farewell this character deserved. Nevertheless, it remains a well-executed Marvel production, featuring impressive action scenes and an intriguing villain in Taskmaster, who can copy the fighting styles of anyone he encounters.
25. Thor: Love and Thunder
Experiencing Taika Waititi’s second Thor film, Love and Thunder, is somewhat akin to witnessing a magician performing the same spellbinding trick twice. The first time left us in awe. The second time, while still captivating, lacks the initial shock factor. Christian Bale delivers an unsettling portrayal of Gorr the God-Butcher, yet his intense and deeply emotional character contrasts with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor and his continuous wisecracking. Love and Thunder shares many components with Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok, but the pieces don’t quite come together as harmoniously this time around.
24. Deadpool & Wolverine
The camaraderie between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in this movie is great, with some unexpected appearances that are sure to surprise. However, the plot, packed with excessive backstories, can be hard to follow and still doesn’t make complete sense. It might help to not overthink things too much to enjoy the film. The characters of Deadpool and Wolverine, played by Reynolds and Jackman respectively, do deliver on their grudging team-up to save the Fox X-Men universe. Yet, you may find yourself wishing the script, written in part by Reynolds himself, had been a bit clearer and more cohesive.
23. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
A revised version of the Iron Man 2 film, dubbed “Bizarro Iron Man 2”: Though it might seem worse than you recall, it remains somewhat enjoyable. The advertising heavily emphasized the conspiracy thriller aspect, yet Anthony Mackie’s Falcon proves to be a fantastic new character within the series, with Chris Evans delivering another solid performance as Captain America. However, I can’t help but feel frustrated that Agent Phil Coulson, one of the world’s greatest spies, was clueless about SHIELD’s widespread corruption, leaving me questioning his awareness. Come on, Nick Fury, wake up! (For further reading, click here.)
22. Avengers: Infinity War
While this film certainly delivers on grandeur and ambition (and its finale is truly epic), it seems to lack something essential for a complete experience. If you’re primarily seeking non-stop action with a sprinkle of witty dialogues, then this movie might suit your preferences. However, if you appreciate character development and camaraderie, along with moments of tranquility amidst the battles, you might find this film lacking in those areas. (For more insights, read further here.)
21. Iron Man 3
A film that’s quite enjoyable, yet slightly diminished by its association with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The storyline concludes with Tony Stark retiring from his Iron Man days, only to return for several more films afterwards. While Guy Pearce’s character, Killian, falls short of expectations, Robert Downey Jr.’s exhaustive interplay with a clever child is top-notch. (Continue reading here.)
20. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Straight away: The climax, featuring dragons and monsters clashing within a thick gray fog, is a chaotic mess of CGI. Prior to this point, however, Shang-Chi could be considered Marvel’s finest action film, boasting numerous thrilling and intricate fight scenes, such as the one on a San Francisco bus which is a real delight. Simu Liu headlines an exceptionally deep Marvel cast, with Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh delivering captivating supporting performances, while Ben Kingsley and Awkwafina consistently provide laughter-inducing moments, including Kingsley’s portrayal of Trevor Slattery, the former Mandarin, who despite not initially being a popular Marvel villain, has been skillfully transformed into an endearing secondary character.
19. Thor
An extraordinary saga unfolding across the vast universe, primarily taking place in … the tiniest town of New Mexico? Despite its flaws, “Thor” stands out as the first Marvel film where exceptional acting and captivating performances managed to surmount structural and script issues, which later became a distinctive feature of Marvel films. (Continue reading here.)
A galaxy-wide adventure predominantly set in … the most minuscule town of New Mexico? In spite of its shortcomings, “Thor” is recognized as the first Marvel film where outstanding acting and compelling performances overcame structural and script issues, a trait that later became characteristic of Marvel movies. (Read further here.)
18. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Ryan Coogler encountered a formidable task when directing “Wakanda Forever”: not only did he need to create a sequel worthy of the original “Black Panther,” but he had to do so without the captivating lead actor, Chadwick Boseman, who sadly passed away in the summer of 2020, as the film was ready to commence production. The movie shines brightest when it weaves Coogler and the cast’s grief for Boseman into the narrative of Wakanda grappling with the loss of its monarch. Unfortunately, the remainder of the film is somewhat disorganized, showcasing a mix of intriguing concepts, numerous characters, and an antagonist, King Namor, whose motives become slightly unclear.
17. The Fantastic Four: First Steps (2025)
The Marvel’s Fantastic Four film titled “First Steps” significantly surpasses the four preceding attempts by Roger Corman and 20th Century Fox to launch a cinematic Fantastic Four (FF) franchise. Given that those earlier films ranged from mediocre to downright poor, such an upgrade was inevitable. The movie boasts stunning visuals and an intriguing villain (the formidable Galactus, who craves Earth due to feelings of loneliness and hunger), although the four protagonists seem somewhat one-dimensional.
“First Steps” is a promising start, with plenty of potential for further development.
16. Captain America: Civil War
The story doesn’t stand up to any examination, and the entire movie appears to be constructed around the climactic confrontation between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers at the airport. It must be said: that airport battle is absolutely thrilling! (You can read more about it… here.)
In this version, I removed the informal abbreviations (“ZOMFG”) and replaced them with a more formal way of expressing enthusiasm (“absolutely thrilling”). Additionally, I rephrased “doesn’t hold up to even a second of scrutiny” as “doesn’t stand up to any examination,” which has a similar meaning but is more polished. Finally, I changed the opening sentence to better reflect the structure of the original text and made some minor changes to improve readability.
15. Spider-Man: No Way Home
In simpler terms, Jon Watts’ third Spider-Man movie is quite similar to Sam Raimi’s third Spider-Man film. Both are packed with numerous villains. However, on a positive note, this movie effectively portrays the charm of Peter Parker as a character – a man who may falter but never gives up on making things right next time. Additionally, it introduces the concept of the multiverse into MCU films in a significant manner, marking a substantial development in the storyline.
The paraphrased version maintains the original’s essence while using more everyday language to make it easier to understand.
14. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
Fifteen years after my departure, I, Sam Raimi, dived back into the Marvel universe with an exhilarating and unruly tale that hangs in the balance of the multiverse’s destiny. Similar to my previous Spider-Man movies, I injected a dash of my unique flavor – witty humor, manic zombies, spine-chilling jump scares – into the conventional Marvel mold. (You can read more about it here.)
13. Thunderbolts (2025)
In my opinion, the Marvel productions that have come out post-“Endgame” often feel like they’ve been pieced together from leftovers of various comics, movies, and lore, much like Frankenstein’s monster. However, “Thunderbolts” truly stands out as a full-fledged movie – a gripping tale with captivating characters, especially Florence Pugh’s portrayal of the new Black Widow. She embodies the feelings of many of us, grappling with dissatisfaction and purposelessness in her life through her work. Her path crosses with an assortment of equally disenchanted mercenaries, including Wyatt Russell as the arrogant U.S. Agent and Hannah John-Kamen’s enigmatic Ghost. “Thunderbolts” delivers exciting action alongside a powerful allegory about overcoming despair and apathy in favor of action and camaraderie. It serves as a poignant reminder of Marvel Studios’ potential when they’re operating at their peak performance.
12. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Despite its lower quality compared to the initial Avengers film and some confusion surrounding Wanda and Pietro’s storyline, I find the final scene where the Avengers unite to save every life in Sokovia to be nothing short of classic Marvel at its finest. (You can read more about it here.)
11. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2
The film packs an excessive number of post-credit scenes, at least four to be exact. Yet, the audacity it requires to transform Marvel’s lightest franchise into a sequel with a devastating finale is truly commendable. It’s the one Marvel movie that manages to bring tears to my eyes and still includes jokes about divine alien phallic symbols. In my opinion, this unique blend of drama and humor makes it a triumphant production. (Read more here.)
10. Thor: Ragnarok
9. Spider-Man: Far From Home
The second Spider-Man film from Marvel, starring Tom Holland as the acrobatic superhero, slightly falls short of its predecessor yet offers an engaging blend of romance, action, humor, and emotion. Although the famous quote “with great power comes great responsibility” is absent, the movie, titled “Far From Home,” still strongly explores this theme as Peter Parker (Holland) grapples with his feelings for MJ (Zendaya, delivering a humorous and dry performance), while also being tasked by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson in an amusingly irritated role) to thwart a group of elemental menaces.
8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn delivers an outstanding conclusion to his Guardians trilogy, blending the perfect Marvel recipe: thrilling action, quirky sci-fi visuals, and compelling characters that we genuinely care about deeply. By the end of Vol. 3, Rocket Raccoon transforms from a minor character in Marvel to one of their most intriguing and heartbreaking heroes. Following a series of less impressive films, Gunn effortlessly proves his talent. Unfortunately, he’s moving on to work with DC Studios now.
7. Avengers: Endgame
A significant leap above “Infinity War” and arguably the second greatest Avengers film yet, featuring enormous action sequences, plenty of humor, and a potential record-breaking number of Easter eggs in the annals of any cinematic universe. (You can read more here.)
6. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Among the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s movies that are hard to resist watching again, this one boasts engaging characters, thrilling web-slinging action, and an unexpected street vendor requesting Spider-Man to perform a flip (which he happily does). Aren’t you hooked? (Read further details here.)
5. Guardians of the Galaxy
In the middle of the Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline, the debut of the original Guardians paved the way for Marvel to showcase its versatility and demonstrated that their brand had the power to draw audiences towards lesser-known properties. Before James Gunn took over, the Guardians were almost insignificant; however, he transformed them into a massive hit. Furthermore, let it be known that Rocket is indisputably the superior Guardian – this point should not be debated, but accepted as truth. (For more information, see [here].)
4. Captain America: The First Avenger
Although the narrative could use some refinement (the entire war is condensed into a quick sequence), Chris Evans’ portrayal of Captain America in this film stands out as one of the most captivating adaptations within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This movie took a character that was often criticized for being uninteresting or outdated and transformed him into an engaging, charismatic, multidimensional figure embodying universal human values. A must-watch when you need a motivational boost. (Source: [Link])
3. Black Panther
Although many Marvel films strive for intricate ties with a broader universe, the film “Black Panther” demonstrates the benefits of a more self-contained narrative. Towards the end of the movie, when Black Panther decides to reveal Wakanda to the global community (and characters are set to appear in future films), it’s meant to be a joyous conclusion. However, if this decision means future sequels will become more scattered with numerous guest appearances, it could potentially detract from the story’s focus and impact. (Read more here.)
2. The Avengers
Despite the events of “Infinity War”, the original “Avengers” movie remains an astonishing feat of balance and storytelling. Each character shines, the dialogue flows smoothly, and the climactic Battle of New York is still one of the most spectacular action sequences of recent times. (Read more here.)
1. Iron Man
The original film remains unmatched to this day. Looking back, it’s clear that the fact the movie wasn’t tied to a broader universe made it an exceptional piece of cinema. The scenes where Robert Downey Jr.’s character Tony Stark tests his armor and subsequently takes flight for the first time embody the excitement of superpowers better than any other film, Marvel or otherwise, has ever achieved.
