Marvel’s Judgement Day Crossover, Explained

Marvel fans might recognize the title Judgement Day as it was also the name of a recent big storyline in the comics. Avengers/X-Men/Eternals: Judgement Day explored whether humanity should be saved or destroyed. Written by Kieron Gillen with art by Valerio Schiti, the seven-issue series ran in 2022 and had several related stories throughout the Marvel universe.

The recent events of A.X.E.: Judgement Day have pushed the superhero world to the edge of war. When the Eternals learned about the Mutant Resurrection Protocols, they attacked the mutants of Krakoa, and the Avengers were forced to get involved. But the Avengers were already dealing with a massive crisis involving the powerful Celestials, who the Eternals answer to. As the Avengers, X-Men, and Eternals fought each other, a much larger threat emerged, endangering everyone on Earth.

When this event happened, the Avengers were operating out of a new base. But a global crisis awakened a powerful Celestial being, who called himself “The Progenitor.” He announced to Earth that humanity would face judgment over the next twenty-four hours. Everyone would be evaluated to see if they deserved to live. If enough people proved worthy, humanity would be spared. Otherwise, the Celestials would destroy all of humankind.

Okay, so as a huge comic fan, let me tell you about this epic finale! Basically, Earth’s heroes come together to save the planet when this incredibly powerful being, the Progenitor, decides it’s doomed. It’s a tough fight, and sadly, not everyone makes it, but they do manage to pull off a win. The ending is seriously chilling, though. The Progenitor, who’s been narrating the whole story, delivers this final line – “every day is Judgement Day” – and it just leaves you with this unsettling feeling that the fight never really ends. It’s a really powerful way to wrap things up.

How Avengers: Doomsday Could Borrow From the Judgement Day Storyline

Although the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday doesn’t appear to closely follow the Judgement Day comic book arc, the movie might still incorporate elements from it. With some countries now using Judgement Day as the title, it’s likely that Avengers 5 will feature important plot points and characters from that comic crossover. The groundwork for this storyline has actually already been laid within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The 2021 movie Eternals brought a new team of heroes – the Eternals – into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, along with the powerful cosmic beings known as the Celestials, whom they serve. The film concluded with a hint that the Celestials would eventually return to evaluate Earth, similar to the ‘Judgement Day’ storyline. Despite the movie not performing well at the box office and Marvel not announcing any follow-up films, the potential return of the Celestials remains a significant question for the future of the MCU.

In the movie Eternals, a powerful Celestial being is found inside the Earth. The Eternal Sersi changes this being into a structure made of Adamantium to prevent it from destroying the planet. This event appears to be connected to the Avengers Mountain headquarters featured in the Judgement Day storyline. It may also explain the origins of the Progenitor, a being who awakens and is tasked with judging whether humanity deserves to continue existing.

Any retelling of the Judgment Day story needs to connect with the introduction of Doctor Doom in the next Avengers movie. Marvel likely wants to ensure the powerful Celestials don’t steal the spotlight from Doom, given how much the film’s promotion focuses on him. However, the Celestials’ judgment could fit very well with the events planned for Doomsday and Doom’s role in it.

A threat from the Celestials would be the ideal diversion for Marvel’s heroes. With all of humanity facing extinction from a massive cosmic event, the heroes would be completely focused on stopping the Celestials, allowing Doctor Doom to secretly build his power. He could use the chaos of the Celestial invasion to pursue his own goals: gaining control over the entire multiverse.

Doctor Doom might be interested in the Celestials as a way to become even more powerful. Many fans believe he’ll eventually transform into “God Emperor Doom,” a storyline from the comics. In the original story, Doom gains this power by taking it from beings called the Beyonders. However, the Marvel Cinematic Universe could have Doom get his power from the Celestials instead. While the Beyonders haven’t appeared in the MCU yet, the Celestials are already established as incredibly powerful beings. This could mean Doom drains their energy to save Earth, but ultimately becomes an even bigger threat with his newfound abilities.

Will The Celestials and Eternals Return in Avengers: Doomsday?

The new connection to the ‘Judgement Day’ storyline in Avengers: Doomsday gives fans the first sign that the Eternals might return. Ever since the Eternals movie came out in 2021 and didn’t perform well in theaters, the future of the team has been uncertain. Planned sequels and spin-offs were cancelled, and very few characters from the film have been mentioned since.

The movie Captain America: Brave New World confirmed that the events of Eternals continue to matter in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. The frozen body of the Celestial Tiamut plays a key role in the new Captain America film, hinting that we might see more connections between the Eternals and the Avengers in the future.

Okay, as a huge MCU fan, I’d be absolutely floored if the next Avengers movie, Doomsday, brought the Eternals back into the mix! Even if they don’t have as big a part as they did in their own movie, it would be amazing. If the Celestials are involved in the finale of this whole Multiverse Saga, it makes total sense that at least some of the Eternals would reappear – they’re pretty much the only heroes who’ve actually fought those giant cosmic beings before, so their experience would be super valuable.

This also allows the Marvel Cinematic Universe to resolve some lingering plot threads. The previous film ended with Arishem the Judge kidnapping Sersi, Kingo, and Phastos, intending to judge them before evaluating Earth. A future Avengers: Doomsday film could finally reveal what happened to these three Eternals, answering a question fans have had for five years.

The movie Eternals famously introduced Harry Styles as Starfox in a scene after the credits. It was reported that Styles signed a contract for five Marvel movies, suggesting Starfox would reappear throughout the ongoing saga and future films. However, the character hasn’t been featured since his initial appearance. With the expected return of the Celestials and Eternals in Avengers: Doomsday, Marvel could finally develop Starfox’s story – and that of his companion, Pip the Troll – as they originally intended.

The title Avengers: Judgement Day sounds impressive, and Marvel fans hope the studio doesn’t miss the opportunity to connect it to a popular storyline from the comics. While it could just be a different name for international audiences, some believe it hints at a significant plot twist in the next movie – one that could finally answer some longstanding questions within the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
