While the imaginative imagery is commendable, Doctor Strange struggles to break free from the sense that it’s essentially an upgraded version of Iron Man 2 (with a touch of magic). However, kudos for the smartly crafted ending with Dormammu. A thumbs down goes out for the eccentric cape worn by Strange. (You can read more here.)
30. Iron Man 2
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that “Sam Rockwell’s electrifying performance” in the film was better than I initially recalled, but it didn’t quite reach greatness. The charisma of his dance moves managed to conceal many flaws, yet some cracks still shone through. If only 15 minutes of initial exposition, akin to the table-setting for the Avengers, were trimmed from this production, we might have been left with a truly captivating piece. For further insights, please refer to [this link](here).
29. Ant-Man
As a fan, I found Ant-Man to be enjoyable, but it’s challenging not to compare it to the grander scale of Edgar Wright’s vision that we missed out on. However, Michael Peña’s portrayal of Luis is undeniably one of the strongest non-superpowered characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, making the movie worth watching for him alone. (Read more here.)
28. Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Stepping into the arena of Ant-Man versus Kang the Conqueror, even the formidable Kang himself (played by Jonathan Majors) admits that Scott Lang is biting off more than he can chew. This colossal mismatch echoes the movie’s theme – the everyday, lighthearted universe of the Ant-Man series with its charming humor and relatable characters seems to pale in comparison to the grandiose multiverse spectacle unfolding in Marvel Phase 5.
As a Marvel blockbuster, it delivers. However, as an extension of the Ant-Man storyline, it falls just short of expectations. If you were anticipating more screen time with Michael Peña’s beloved character Luis, I regret to inform you that he is absent from this installment.
27. Ant-Man and the Wasp
The movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp” shines brightest when it emphasizes its compactness, featuring hilarious banter between Paul Rudd and his fellow actors, Michael Peña’s heartfelt monologues, and a tender, family-focused narrative about a fragmented family working to mend itself. (For further details, check out this link.)
26. Captain Marvel
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Brie Larson’s character Carol Danvers could be the strongest hero, yet her movie seemed to fall short in delivering a powerful emotional punch. Nevertheless, it manages to stay engaging thanks to two exceptional performances: Ben Mendelsohn as the cunning Skrull Talos, and Samuel L. Jackson, along with his impressive de-aging visual effects, portraying the young Nick Fury. (Continue reading here.)
Although Brie Larson’s character Carol Danvers is arguably the most powerful hero in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, her movie didn’t quite hit the mark emotionally. However, it remains engaging due to two standout performances – Ben Mendelsohn as the resourceful Skrull Talos and Samuel L. Jackson (with his impressive de-aging special effects) portraying a younger Nick Fury. (Read more here.)
25. Black Widow
In 2021, Scarlett Johansson’s long-awaited solo outing, “Black Widow,” found her primarily serving as a straight character to the witty Russian superhero ensemble, comprising David Harbour’s narcissistic Red Guardian and Florence Pugh’s captivating Yelena. Consequently, this film may not have given Black Widow the fitting farewell she deserved. Nevertheless, it remains another well-executed Marvel blockbuster, boasting striking stunt sequences and an intriguing antagonist in the form of Taskmaster, who exhibits the ability to replicate fighting styles of any adversary encountered.
24. Thor: Love and Thunder
Viewing Taika Waititi’s second Thor movie, “Thor: Love and Thunder,” seems somewhat like observing a magician perform the same trick twice in quick succession. The initial performance was mesmerizing. However, the second time around, while it remains impressive, it loses some of its initial surprise value. Christian Bale delivers an unsettling portrayal of Gorr the God-Butcher, but his intense and deeply emotional villain character doesn’t quite harmonize with Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, who continues to dish out non-stop quips. Essentially, “Thor: Love and Thunder” retains the same components as Taika Waititi’s “Thor: Ragnarok,” but they don’t blend together as smoothly this time around.
23. Deadpool & Wolverine
The camaraderie between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman in this movie is everything you’d expect. Their cameos are unexpectedly thrilling. However, the plot… it pushes the limits of how much background information a film can have without becoming confusing. (One character’s backstory seems to be endless; this movie has at least two!) If you can manage not to think about the action for even a moment, you’ll find yourself entertained. And Jackman and Reynolds certainly deliver on the promise of Deadpool and Wolverine reluctantly teaming up to save the Fox X-Men universe. You might wish that the writers (including Reynolds himself) had provided a slightly clearer narrative.
22. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
As a devoted cinephile, I must admit that the unconventional version of “Iron Man 2” I watched was even worse than I had previously recalled, but still managed to hold its ground. The promotional hype emphasized the conspiracy thriller aspect far too much, yet Anthony Mackie’s portrayal of Falcon was an outstanding enhancement for the franchise, and Chris Evans embodied Captain America with his usual robustness and reliability.
However, it remains a source of frustration that Nick Fury, the world’s greatest spy, was oblivious to the fact that everyone in SHIELD except him and his two companions were utterly corrupt. Come on, Nick! With all your expertise, how could you miss such a glaring red flag?
21. Avengers: Infinity War
This film is immense in scale and ambition, and its ending is truly unforgettable. However, it seems there’s a certain element lacking. If you’re primarily seeking an action-packed Marvel movie with some witty dialogue, then this might meet your expectations. But if you prefer the characters, camaraderie, and quieter scenes between battles, this film may not satisfy that aspect for you. (You can find more insights [here].)
20. Iron Man 3
A decent film was somewhat let down by the extensive Marvel Cinematic Universe context. The entire movie leads up to Tony Stark deciding to abandon his Iron Man life, only to embark on a sunset journey. However, he went on to star in at least six more films afterwards. While Guy Pearce’s character Killian fell short, all of Robert Downey Jr.’s frustrated conversations with a bright child were excellent. (You can read more about it here.)
The movie was generally good, but the Marvel Universe context made it slightly less so. The film culminates in Tony Stark deciding to leave his Iron Man days behind, but then he went on to star in six more movies. Guy Pearce’s character Killian failed to impress, but Robert Downey Jr.’s interactions with a sharp-witted child were top-notch. (You can read more about it here.)
19. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings
Initially: The climax, featuring dragons and monsters clashing in thick gray mist, is a chaotic mess of CGI. Apart from that, Shang-Chi could very well be Marvel’s finest action film to date, boasting numerous intense and intricately choreographed fight scenes. (The one on the San Francisco bus is particularly enjoyable.) Simu Liu delivers a standout performance as the lead, with Tony Leung and Michelle Yeoh offering substantial support, their performances brimming with depth. Ben Kingsley and Awkwafina provide numerous moments of humor, with Kingsley’s portrayal of Trevor Slattery, the former Mandarin, initially not the most beloved Marvel villain, but Marvel has successfully transformed him into a delightful side character.
18. Thor
In an unexpected twist, the epic saga unfolds predominantly in the tiniest corner of New Mexico – a setting that might seem odd for a film like Thor. Despite some flaws, this Marvel production stands out as the initial movie where outstanding acting and captivating performances managed to overshadow structural and script problems, which later became a signature trait of Marvel films. (Continue reading
17. Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
In his task to create “Wakanda Forever”, director Ryan Coogler encountered an extremely tough predicament. Apart from delivering a sequel that matched the greatness of the original “Black Panther”, he had to accomplish this without Chadwick Boseman, who tragically passed away during summer 2020 while production was about to commence. The film excels in its portrayal of Coogler and the cast’s grief over Boseman as it weaves into the narrative of Wakanda grappling with the loss of their king. Unfortunately, the remainder of the movie can be a bit disjointed; a blend of intriguing concepts, numerous characters, and an antagonist, King Namor, who is somewhat unclear in his motivations.
16. Captain America: Civil War
The plot falls apart under any level of examination, and the entire film is constructed to lead to the epic showdown between Tony Stark and Steve Rogers at the airport. However, let me tell you: Oh my goodness, the battle at the airport is absolutely amazing! (Read more here.)
15. Spider-Man: No Way Home
In simple terms, Jon Watts’ third Spider-Man movie shares similarities with Sam Raimi’s third Spider-Man film, as both are packed with numerous villains. However, this latest movie effectively portrays Peter Parker’s character, who despite frequent failures, continues to strive for improvement. Moreover, it significantly expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) by introducing the concept of the multiverse, making a significant mark in the ongoing saga.
14. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
After a 15-year absence, film director Sam Raimi re-entered the Marvel universe with an exhilaratingly chaotic tale revolving around a fight for the survival of multiple dimensions. Similar to his previous Spider-Man films, Raimi creatively blended his unique style and visuals – such as slapstick humor, maniacal zombies, sudden jolts – into the conventional Marvel narrative. (For further details, check out this article.)
13. Thunderbolts (2025)
In many Marvel productions following “Endgame“, it seems as if the content has been pieced together from leftovers of various comics, movies, and lore, much like a Frankenstein monster. However, the upcoming film “Thunderbolts*” stands out as a genuine movie; it offers an engaging narrative with several intriguing characters, particularly Florence Pugh who portrays the new Black Widow. This character, like many of us, is disillusioned with her life and finds her job meaningless. She discovers her purpose when she’s grouped with a band of similarly disheartened mercenaries, including Wyatt Russell as the arrogant U.S. Agent and Hannah John-Kamen as the ethereal Ghost. With its exciting action sequences and a powerful allegory about overcoming despair and apathy through action and camaraderie, “Thunderbolts*” serves as a reminder of Marvel Studios’ potential when they are at their best.
*Note: The title “Thunderbolts” is not explicitly mentioned in the original text, but it can be inferred from the context.
12. Avengers: Age of Ultron
I’m baffled by the dislike for this movie. Granted, it may not have reached the heights of the initial Avengers film, and the storyline involving Wanda and Pietro was confusing. However, the climactic scene where the Avengers unite to save every life in Sokovia encapsulates the essence of Marvel at its finest. (For further insights, check out this article here.)
11. Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2
10. Thor: Ragnarok
9. Spider-Man: Far From Home
In the sequel to Marvel’s Spidey film, starring Tom Holland as the acrobatic wall-traversing hero, the movie titled “Far From Home” slightly falls short of its predecessor yet offers a delightful blend of romance, action, humor, and emotion. Although the phrase “with great power comes great responsibility” isn’t explicitly mentioned, this film continues to explore that theme as much as any Spider-Man story ever has. Peter Parker, portrayed by Holland, grapples with his feelings for MJ (a witty Zendaya) while also adhering to Nick Fury’s (Samuel L. Jackson delivering a humorously irritated performance) instructions to combat a group of destructive elemental beings.
8. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
James Gunn wraps up his fantastic Guardians trilogy brilliantly, offering the perfect Marvel blend: Thrilling action sequences, quirky sci-fi visuals, and heartfelt characters that we deeply connect with. By the end of Volume 3, Rocket Raccoon transforms from a minor Marvel character to one of the most intriguing and emotionally complex heroes, marked by his tragic journey. After a series of less impressive films, Gunn makes it appear effortless. It’s unfortunate that he is moving on to manage DC properties instead.
7. Avengers: Endgame
A significant leap forward from “Infinity War” and arguably the second finest Avengers film yet, boasting massive action sequences, numerous humorous moments, and an impressive number of Easter eggs that could potentially surpass any movie across all cinematic universes. (For further details, click here.)
6. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Among the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s films that are worth revisiting, this one boasts compelling characters, thrilling web-based action from Spider-Man, and an unexpected street vendor requesting a flip from Spider-Man (who obliges). Aren’t you hooked? (Continue reading
5. Guardians of the Galaxy
As we reach the halfway mark of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), the initial Guardians movie served a significant role in demonstrating that Marvel could tackle less mainstream characters and still draw large audiences. Before James Gunn came along, the Guardians were virtually unknown, but he turned them into an unexpected hit. And let’s just agree for the sake of argument that Rocket is unquestionably the best Guardian. (You can read more about it [here].)
4. Captain America: The First Avenger
Although the plot could use some tightening (as it condenses an entire war into a montage), Chris Evans’ portrayal of Captain America in this film is arguably the most successful character adaptation within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This movie transformed a hero often criticized as dull or outdated into a captivating, charming, multifaceted individual embodying straightforward human values. A perfect choice to watch when you need a boost of inspiration. [Source: (Read more here.)]
3. Black Panther
Instead of striving for intricate connections with the cosmos in many Marvel movies, Black Panther demonstrates the merit of a more secluded strategy. At the end of the film, when Black Panther decides to reveal Wakanda to the global community (and allows its characters to appear elsewhere), it’s meant to be a joyful conclusion. However, if this decision means that future installments will become more scattered and filled with guest appearances, perhaps it isn’t such a happy ending after all. [Read more here.]
2. The Avengers
After the epic events of “Infinity War”, the original “Avengers” movie remains an astounding marvel. Each character is artfully balanced, the script is concise and engaging, while the climactic Battle of New York stands as one of this century’s most remarkable action sequences. (Read more here.)
1. Iron Man
The original has yet to be surpassed. Looking back, it’s clear that the film’s lack of commitment to a broader universe contributed to its excellence. The scenes featuring Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark testing his armor and subsequently flying for the first time evoke the excitement of superpowers more effectively than any other movie ever made by Marvel or anyone else, as far as I know.
